Candice Broersma

Candice Broersma is an artist, illustrator, and arts educator residing in Yucaipa, California. Her work revolves around fantastical subject matter, including mythical beasts, strange characters, and otherworldly environments. Candice received her bachelors in Studio Art and Music at the University of Redlands and continues to collaborate between fields. She went on to study illustration and received her masters at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Presently, she is freelancing and teaching the new generation of creative minds.

Candice's classes are available to students of all ages. She teaches grades 2-12 at the Competitive Edge Charter Academy as well as adult classes at Michaels Arts & Crafts. Inquiries can be sent to

A new collaborative workspace in Redlands called The Orange Space features guest talks and a variety of monthly workshops. This month, workshops include Photo Fundamentals, Block Printmaking, Creative Ideation, and Calligraphy. The workshops are friendly for beginners and open to all. 

At the Creative Ideation Workshop on February 19, attendees will learn methods for generating great ideas for illustration and graphic design. Illustrator Candice Broersma will demonstrate her approach for different projects she has worked on, including cover art, logo design, and character design. The workshop will also include a guided project creating a fictional logo design to apply new skills in conceptualizing. All that is needed for the workshop is paper, pencil, and your thinking cap!

Lecture & Demonstration: Digital Painting


Thursday, 11/10 7:30pm-9pm

Watch how you can paint with pixels as Candice Broersma reveals the different steps in her process for creating digital art in Adobe Photoshop. The demonstration will highlight specific Photoshop tools such as brush settings, layer modes, and adjustments as well as general painting techniques for realistic rendering. Following the 1 hour demonstration will be a half-hour Q&A for questions from participants. Everyone is welcome to bring their laptops and drawing tablets to the demonstration.



Workshop: Fantasy Portraits

Session 1: Monday, 11/14 3:30pm-5:00pm


Session 2: Wednesday, 11/16 3:30pm-5:00pm


This 2-day workshop will take you through the process of making a portrait of a fantasy character with the aid of a sculpted maquette! Participants will be choosing either a mermaid or a fawn as the basis for their portrait drawing and will begin by conceptualizing their character. Students will then learn sculpting basics and create a bust of their fantasy character to use as reference for their final piece.

Downtown Redlands will feature another Art walk this Sunday, October 23 12pm-6pm. Among the festivities at the walk include the IE Zine Fest, Redlands Conservatory Arts & Sciences Fair, Fair Chocolate & Coffee Fair, and art at several venues including Civic Plaza, State St, and the Renaissance Banquet Hall. The Banquet Hall alone will feature over 10 artists and designers as well as live music performances.

Monster Buddy Project

The young and young-at-heart are invited to submit their most creative drawing of an imaginary friend. Your "Monster Buddy" can be cute or fierce, big or small--the sky's the limit! Illustrator Candice Broersma will be taking the top monsters and creating her own interpretation as a fun drawing exercise and to highlight the imaginations of beginning artists. The entrants whose work is selected will be featured online and compiled together in a future printed booklet. Drawings will be selected based on originality and adherence to submission guidelines.
