James O'Keefe and David Mackenzie "Painting on Painting"
JTAG presents new works by James O'Keefe and David Mackenzie opening Feb. 10 6-8PM
David Mackenzie is best known as an artist’s artist. Mackenzie considers his work to be part of the non-objective tradition of painting and touches on notions of deconstructive architecture, modernist history, geometry and perspective. His carefully considered and formulated surfaces are part of his process.
Mackenzie's paintings are pure line & spacial presences that draws the eye of the viewer into these master works of minimalism.
"Painting is about keeping an open mind and letting things happen. I try to suspend judgemental thoughts that inhibit outcomes. Physically, I am balancing desires for control with accidents and the unexpected. Mentally, painting is a struggle between freedom and confinement. I often try to explain things, but I must also honor the unexplainable. The freedom in painting is that it can truly leave what is known, redefine itself and constantly explore. This is what inspirational painting has always done.
This series of new work at JTAG are paintings about making paintings. Some paintings have frames mounted within the picture plane creating a kind of a picture within picture scenario. The new questions raised are, what is a picture? and what are the boundaries of a picture? "
This show runs until March 4, 2018.
